Loneliness, architecture and public space

The round table Loneliness, Architecture and Public Space is part of the framework of Barcelona World Capital of Architecture 2026 and the City Pact Against Loneliness, presented on May 12 this year.
The session will be moderated by journalist Eva Arderius and will feature Alba Méndez, architect and holder of a master’s degree in neuroarchitecture, specialising in spaces for living, working and learning, and Sonia Frías, Director of Urban Services at Barcelona City Council.
The activity is closely aligned with Challenge 3 of the City Pact: public space as a social connector, addressing how urban design, architecture and the management of collective spaces can foster relationships, coexistence and a sense of belonging, thereby helping to prevent situations of unwanted loneliness.
From complementary perspectives —scientific and institutional— the round table aims to generate reflection and knowledge to move towards more inclusive, accessible and people-centred public spaces, placing relational well-being at the heart of urban planning.
