Guided visit of the Exhibition "The Body We Inhabit"
Col·legi de l'Arquitectura Tècnica de Barcelona (CATEB)
Buildings breathe, lose heat through their skin, accumulate moisture, emit invisible substances and grow old. Just like our bodies. And when they become ill, the people who live inside them feel the effects too.
The Body We Inhabit invites visitors to look at the buildings we live in through a different lens: that of a doctor examining a patient. It does so through a journey through a hospital dedicated to buildings, where each room reveals a different layer of their health and its impact on the people who inhabit them.
Because behind a damp wall there may be a chronic respiratory problem. Because a building’s energy efficiency rating determines how cold you feel in winter and how much you pay each month. Because thousands of homes built before the 1980s contain materials that release substances which cannot be seen, smelled or perceived, yet may affect the health of those who live there.
Through façade biopsies, thermographic imaging, microscopy and data, the exhibition invites visitors to discover what lies beneath a building’s skin. It demonstrates that caring for the spaces we inhabit is also caring for our health.
Because most domestic building pathologies can be resolved. We simply need to know when to call a building health professional who can diagnose the problem and provide a remedy.
